Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)

The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) has been introduced as part of the Home Information Pack as a way of giving your home an energy efficiency rating. The rating given to your home will range from A-G, very much like the rating system you see on modern electrical equipment. As well as rating your home, the EPC will give you some recommendations on how to improve your rating and how much money these improvements could save you - it can be upwards of £300 per year!

What is involved in getting an EPC?

In order to get an Energy Performance Certificate a physical survey needs to be carried out. When you book your EPC or HIP we will get in touch with you to arrange a time that suits you. On the day of the survey, one of our Domestic Energy Assessors will come to your property and carry out the survey. The survey will take around 45 minutes to an hour and will involve the assessor gathering information about your property, how it is heated and insulated. This information is then fed into a computer program and your EPC is produced.

You do not have to be present at your property when the survey is carried out, although it may be useful as there are certain questions that are much more easily and accurately answered with you there!

Do I need an EPC?

If you are selling your house then you most likely need a HIP and therefore you will need an Energy Performance Certificate.

Equally, if you are a landlord renting out a property you will soon be required to provide an Energy Performance Certificate to your tenants. More information about EPCs for rented property can be found on our Landlords EPC page.
